Description

The beacon tower at the east end of the North Pier of West Harbour is a Grade II listed structure, built around 1850, likely designed by engineer Thomas Casebourne for the Hartlepool West Harbour and Dock Company. The tower features a cast iron column and lantern, set on a sandstone ashlar plinth. It has a fluted Doric column with a square abacus that supports an octagonal pedestal-shaped lantern. Each face of the lantern has a rectangular opening, which is now mostly blocked and covered with copper sheets. There is a door located at the base of the north-west face of the column, and the structure stands on a five-stepped octagonal plinth. Originally, it served as a navigation light at the entrance to West Harbour, but it is now disused and in a state of disrepair.
