Description

Sculcoates Bridge is a swing road bridge that spans the River Hull, built in 1874. It was designed by J Fox Sharp and constructed by the Bridge & Roofing Co. Ltd., of Darlaston. The bridge features riveted wrought-iron girders with arch tops that create the main span, and it has wrought-iron guard rails along the wooden footways on both sides. At the western pivoted end, there is a taper roller bearing with a sectional cast-iron cage and counterweights, which are represented by short coped walls with capped rectangular pedestals, all featuring plinths and cornices. The pedestals display panels with coats of arms and inscriptions. Approximately 5 meters to the west, there is a pair of fluted cast-iron bollards with caps. The free end of the bridge includes a pair of cast-iron support wheels. The mechanism of the bridge is complete and operable.
