Description
The former Hull Hydraulic Power Company premises, built in 1875 by Henry Robinson of London, is now a workshop. This single-storey building is constructed of red brick with blue brick dressings and a rendered plinth. It features four sets of round-arched cast-iron glazing bar casement windows, arranged in a 4x2 pattern. The right side of the building has a blocked door on the left and a window on the right.
Notably, the building has no separate roof; instead, it supports a sectional cast-iron tank inscribed "Stacey Davis & Co., Phoenix Foundry, Derby." The tank was used to store water pumped from the River Hull, which was then pressurized by steam pumps and distributed through underground pipes to consumers.
This hydraulic power system was significant as it was the first of its kind established by Act of Parliament in the UK and served as Hull's first public utility. At its peak around 1900, it supplied approximately two hundred consumers, reaching as far as the Old Harbour. The operation ceased in 1947. Hydraulic power companies were also established in other cities, including London and Manchester, during the late 19th century.
There is an exhibit related to this history in the Yorkshire Water Museum at Springhead, Hull, and a plaque on the building placed by the City Council.
