Description
High Flags Mill is an oil mill built around 1856. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof featuring coped gables and parapets. The building stands three storeys tall and has a façade with three groups of ten windows. The windows are segment-headed, with the smaller windows on the first and second floors having brick flat arches, although most of these windows are blocked.
The facing gable has three blocked windows on both the first and second floors, and below these are three larger 20-pane cast-iron glazing bar casements with large overlights; two of these have been fitted with ventilators. The left side of the building also has blocked windows on the first and second floors. In the fifth bay, there is a covered metal bridge connecting to an adjoining building. The sixth bay features a dormer with a shouldered coped gable and a door accessed by an external metal stair. Below this, to the right, are four 2-pane casements with toplights.
This mill is an important early example of an oil mill, reflecting the port-related trades of Hull. A wall plaque placed by the Hull Civic Society recognizes its significance.
