Description

The concrete workshop block at De Smet-Rosedowns Ltd, located on Caroline Street in Kingston upon Hull, was built in 1900 for Rose, Downs & Thompson. This disused workshop is constructed using in-situ reinforced concrete following the Hennebique principle and is painted. The building stands four storeys tall and features a cornice.

The front facade facing Caroline Street has a segment-headed window to the left on the ground floor, while the remaining windows are blocked. Above this, there are two segment-headed windows and six wooden casements to the right. The third floor contains eight wooden casements. To the left of the cornice, there is a square clock tower with a cornice.

The rear elevation includes a glazed external stair that covers some of the windows. On the first floor, there are two blank windows flanked on the left by four segment-headed windows and on the right by two similar windows. Above, there are four segment-headed windows with blank tops to the right, followed by two more windows with blank tops. The ground floor features a flat-headed three-light window flanked on the left by four round-headed windows and on the right by two similar windows. This building is notable for being the first constructed in England using the Hennebique method.
