Description
Nos. 20-34 Clarence Place comprise a group of shops, offices, and accommodation, built in the early 20th century as part of a wider commercial development. The building is an 8-bay, 4-storey range constructed of brick and ashlar. Nos. 20, 22, and 24 feature entrances with a domestic style, while the remaining units have shopfronts. The design is generally symmetrical and homogenous, with all units displaying similar architectural details. The windows are plate glass sashes, some of which have been replaced, and are set within moulded surrounds. Each unit has a 3-window range. The first floor windows are particularly elaborate, featuring heavy Gibbs surrounds and keystones; the central window has an elaborate entablature with a deep keystone and broken pediment. The second floor windows have moulded aprons to the two outer windows. The egg and dart cornice continues from the adjacent range, Nos. 10-18 Clarence Place, with matching dividing pilasters although the Ionic capitals are slightly simpler. The pilasters on the top storey are decorated with carved panels, topped by a plain cornice and a high parapet that conceals the roof. At ground floor level, the three right-hand units are distinguished by a deep band and feature round-arched doorways with Gibbs surrounds, alongside two windows with prominent keystones. The shopfronts have been remodelled, although traces of the original design remain at the left end in the form of 6-panelled doors and 6-pane overlights.
This building is considered an integral part of the Clarence Place commercial development and is included for its group value alongside Nos. 10-18 Clarence Place and the Technical Institute, as well as for its group value in relation to the War Memorial.
