Description

Priory Farmhouse is a two-cell entry house, likely dating back to the 17th century, with later additions to the rear. It is constructed of roughly coursed local sandstone rubble, which is largely rendered and painted to varying degrees. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, and the chimneys are built of red brick. The house has a single-depth plan with outshuts added to the rear wall.

The main south elevation originally had three windows, all with pointed heads containing 2-light casement windows with 2 panes of glass in each light and Y tracery in the heads. The lower floor windows are likely replacements from the 19th century; however, the smoother masonry beneath the sill of the right-hand window suggests the originals were lower. The present early 19th-century design of the front suggests a central doorway, but the window is contemporary with the others, and there is no evidence a door was ever present. A wider gap between the first and second floors may indicate that the ground floor ceilings were raised when the walls were altered. The low pitched roof suggests a 19th century reconstruction and is punctuated by brick end stacks. A single window illuminates the ground floor room within the right-hand gable. The left-hand gable features a 17th-century entrance between the stack and the front wall, which was altered in the 19th century to include an elliptical head and a plank door. A 19th-century 3 x 2 pane window, positioned between a stack and the rear wall, provides light to the staircase. The rear elevation incorporates two lean-to extensions covering the ground floor; the left-hand one, serving as a dairy, features a small 2 x 2 light casement, while the right, which is the kitchen, has a plain doorway and another casement with 2 + 2 panes. The upper wall of the main block has a 4-light casement window with a central square timber mullion, containing four panes of glass in each light, also probably from the 19th century. The rear elevation also bears a low-pitched slate roof with a tall square brick chimney serving the kitchen range.

The kitchen, living room, and staircase were observed during inspection. The kitchen has a flagstone floor, a working range, and a stoneware sink. The entrance to the main house leads to a corridor that connects to the staircase on the right and entrances to two living rooms on the left. The living room has an entrance door to the left of the stack and a mid-20th century tiled fireplace where the original hearth was located. Access to the firestair now comes from the corridor. A single chamfered crossbeam is visible in the living room. The interior of the house remains remarkably unchanged from its 19th-century state, with only very minor alterations in the 20th century.
