Description
The Bulmore is a house that is smooth rendered, likely over local rubble, and features a Welsh slate roof with decorative barge-boards. It has a square main block that is centrally planned, along with a service wing. The main block presents a symmetrical front with a gabled center section that is brought forward. The service wing, which is attached to the left, is set back and has a slightly lower roof.
The house is two storeys tall with a basement and has a five-windowed main front. All the windows are mullioned and transomed 2-light windows with horizontal bars, set under moulded stopped drips. There is a continuous string course at first floor level, applicable only to the main block. The central door is set back within a porch that features a 4-centred arch and a drip stone, which incorporates the painted arms of the Gardner and Hodgson families. Inside the porch, there is a fine six-panel door beneath a flat, painted transom light.
On the right side of the house, there is a one-storey canted bay, and set back to the right is a wing that has a pair of French doors, all styled similarly to the windows, flanked by two deep statue niches that are currently empty.
Although not inspected during the recent resurvey, it is reported to have many original features, including a stick baluster stair, shutters, and doors with moulded panels. In the main room at the back right, there is a notable Gothick fireplace with two multi-cusped insets and Batty Langley style triple colonette mantel supports. The house also has a brick vaulted cellar with flat segmental vaults supported by a central iron beam and cast iron column, along with a stone floor. These details were noted in the 1983 listing description when the interior was last inspected, and it seems likely that no significant alterations have occurred since then.
