Description
The Stable Court at Glen Usk, which includes a fountain to the southwest, is a stable courtyard featuring a clock tower at the northeast corner. Adjoining the tower to the northeast is a single-storey stable range, while a two-storey office range is located to the east, with additional stabling to the south. The courtyard is enclosed on the west side by cast-iron gates set between heavy stone piers topped with shallow pyramidal copings, along with narrow side gates. The design is in a simplified classical style, finished in white roughcast with a Welsh slate roof.
The north range has a small tower at its western corner, which is three storeys high and features narrow slit windows with hood moulds on its western side (the first floor is blind). Above these windows is a moulded circular panel that balances the clock on the south elevation, which originally came from Bertholey House. This elevation also includes a round-arched doorway on the ground floor and two lights above. The cornice has nesting holes for doves, and the shallow pyramidal slate roof is topped with a lantern that has wavy boarded louvres and a small pyramidal roof with a ball finial. At the rear of the tower is a lean-to garage with a round-arched doorway and a segmentally arched loft door.
The south range is canted in plan and consists of a series of stables and loose boxes, each with paired boarded doors that have small grilles. The near-symmetrical eastern block is two storeys high with a hipped roof and three bays; the central bay is slightly advanced and higher, featuring a tall arch that rises into a pediment. The openings have segmental arches, with a doorway on the ground floor and a window above. To the left is a doorway, and to the right are 12-pane sash windows on each floor. A chimney is located on the right-hand gable. The south range is also symmetrical, with an advanced central gabled bay that has sliding doors on the ground floor and a round-arched loft light above. The right-hand bay alternates between paired boarded doors (with small grilles) and cast-iron windows (fixed light and hopper). The left-hand bay features a central doorway flanked by windows, all with segmental heads.
The fountain against the outer gable wall features a lion's head mask as the spout, with a segmental stone basin supported on balls. The stabling retains blue brick flooring and glazed tiled walls, including those for the stall dividers.
