Description

This is a farmhouse, with its earliest range dating back to the mid-16th century. It was refenestrated with timber mullions featuring ovolo moulding in the early to mid-17th century, likely when a new east-west range was added. The 17th-century range joins the earlier range at the northwest corner. Both ranges are built with elevations of random liassic limestone rubble, with traces of limewash, and have gabled, slated roofs.

The main range has a 19th-century or later gabled porch on the north gable, above which is a two-light window with ovolo moulding. A small multi-paned, two-light casement is to the right, and a small attic window is to the left. The north elevation of the 17th-century range has a large rendered gable stack at the west end, where it joins the main range. A north-south range has an axial stack rebuilt in brick and rendered. The west elevation (on the south side) includes a three-light window with ovolo moulding, missing one mullion, to the north end, and a multi-paned casement within an ovolo-moulded frame towards the south end, with a three-light 19th-century casement below. The south gable of the north-south range has a 16-paned hornless sash with shutters on the ground floor, beneath a wide relieving arch that shows evidence of a former four-light mullioned window. A blocked three-light opening is above, with an enlarged attic window opening to the gable.

The east elevation of the north-south range has a blocked three-light, ovolo-moulded window on the ground floor. The rear (south) elevation of the east-west wing has a square-headed doorway at the west end with a 19th-century door and a small four-pane casement above. A gabled, single-story 19th-century kitchen range projects south from the east-west range, with a multi-paned casement window on its east side. The east gable of the east-west range has a two-light multi-paned casement in the attic. The front elevation of the east-west range features a three-light timber window with small panes at ground floor level to the right, a two-light multi-paned casement to the first floor on the left, and a four-light multi-paned casement to the right.

The property retains a strong sub-medieval character and is largely unmodernised. Inside the east-west wing is a flagged floor and a large open fireplace with a timber bressumer and a smoking chamber on the north side. A wide wooden spiral staircase rises to the attic storey, which is partially collapsed. A south chamber in the north-south range retains broad chamfered ceiling beams and a 16th-century fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel, plain chamfered jambs, and thistle stops. A closet is located on the east side of the fire, with a blocked window. The first floor and attic storey retain broad oak floorboards. The roof structure includes good 16th and 17th-century pegged “A” frame trusses.
