Description

The Cattle Market, constructed in 1844, is a notable building made from coursed sandstone ashlar. It features flat stone lintels with keystones and has a roof made of corrugated iron, while the rear elevation is rendered. At the eastern end of the front elevation, there is a prominent projecting gable with a pediment, which includes a circular porthole and an inset cast iron plaque that depicts Sir Charles Morgan along with the inscription "CATTLE MARKET 1844." The central doorway is flanked by two rectangular openings. The western range has a central doorway and two additional rectangular openings on either side, all featuring similar lintels. The western end of the building has been truncated and infilled with modern brickwork, revealing contemporary cast iron roof trusses that bear marks from the Tredegar foundry. These trusses each have a cambered tie and a central circle, with a total of ten visible.
