Description
The former cattle market building and attached gates, dated 1877, were designed by Watson Fothergill of Nottingham. The structure is made of red brick with blue brick and ashlar dressings, featuring gabled and hipped plain tile roofs adorned with decorative ridge tiles. It has a single panelled brick ridge stack and a chamfered rock-faced stone plinth, along with moulded brick eaves.
The building stands two storeys high and has a four-window range. The central block is recessed and flanked by gabled and hipped wings. In the center, there are two 2-light mullioned windows, with the left window missing its mullion. Below this, a lean-to porch sits between the wings, featuring a doorway on the left with double doors and two small square windows on the right. The gabled left wing includes a large 3-light cross mullion window with a decorative relieving arch. To the left of this wing is a lean-to porch with a single window and a plank door beneath a hood. The left return has two small windows.
The hipped right wing features a hipped oriel window on corbels and a 3-light mullion window below it. There is also a drinking fountain with a single lancet above and a plank door with a shouldered arch to the right. The right return facing Nottingham Road has a projecting rock-faced stone ground floor. To the right, there is a round corner tower with machicolated eaves and a conical roof topped with a wind vane. The ground floor includes a central 3-light stone cross casement window, a small 2-light window on the right, and a panelled door on the left with a shouldered ashlar surround.
Attached to the north-west corner are a pair of chamfered square ashlar gate piers with chamfered octagonal caps, supporting a pair of ornate wrought-iron gates made by The Meadow Foundry Co Ltd, Mansfield.
