Description
Nos. 12, 14, and 16 Lower Parliament Street is a former shop and warehouse, now used as a shop and offices, built in 1896 by Watson Fothergill of Nottingham for Furley & Co., provision merchants. The building was altered in 1925 and again in the late 20th century. It features red brick construction with blue brick and ashlar dressings, and has hipped plain tile roofs topped with an octagonal turret.
The design includes polychrome string courses and a tiled eaves canopy below the attics. The structure has three storeys plus attics and consists of two blocks with five bays each. It occupies a rectangular corner site with an angled corner entrance bay flanked by bartizans and topped with a stepped gable. The stone doorcase leads to a blank first floor, while the second floor features an oriel window and a round-arched tripartite window in the gable.
The right side facing Lower Parliament Street has a central entrance with cast-iron columns, flanked by late 20th-century shopfronts. Above this entrance are two Diocletian windows, reglazed in 1925, and beneath them are four terracotta sculpture panels. Above these, there are two three-light cross mullioned windows. The attics display applied timber framing and include two hipped dormers with cross casements.
The left side facing Clinton Street West has similar window designs on the upper floors and four attic dormers. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a segment-arched shop entrance made of ashlar and glazed tile, featuring a mullioned overlight.
