Description
Express Chambers is a building located on Upper Parliament Street in Nottingham, constructed in 1876 by Fothergill Watson for the Nottingham Daily Express. It was raised and extended in 1899 by Watson Fothergill and underwent restoration and additions in 1983. The structure is made of ashlar, featuring polychrome ashlar and red brick dressings, with gabled and hipped plain tile roofs. It exhibits a Gothic Revival style, characterized by its plinth, string courses, and a pentice roof below the attics.
The corner block stands three storeys plus attics and has a six-window range. The windows have been reglazed and feature stone mullions and tracery. At the left corner, there is a round entrance tower with four stages, topped with a slated conical spire and hipped lucarnes. The entrance includes a circular porch with a round-arched double entrance and sidelights, supported by round piers with crocket capitals. Wrought-iron gates and screens are present, along with portrait busts of Liberal leaders above the entrance. A pierced balustrade on brackets and a two-light window are situated above, followed by a blind arcade with small windows.
To the left of the entrance, there is a plain block with two windows. The street front features two shouldered doorways on the left, which have been altered to windows. To their right is a round-arched doorway under a gable, flanked on the left by an original segment-arched opening and on the right by three similar openings, all fitted with late 20th-century shopfronts. Above this, there is a canted oriel window with four sashes, followed by five round-arched windows, two of which are sashes, with central shafts. Further up, there are three pointed arched windows, a recess with three triple flat-headed windows, and two two-light pointed arched windows. The attics feature a coped gable on the left with a round-arched three-light window with tracery, and to the right, two similar gables and windows, along with three large hipped through-eaves dormers in between.
