Description
The Blue Bell Public House is a public house located on Upper Parliament Street in Nottingham. It was built in the late 19th century and remodelled in 1904 by Hedley J Price of Nottingham, with alterations made in the mid and late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with faience fronts and features slate roofs with various gable stacks, showcasing a Baroque Revival style on the front facing Upper Parliament Street.
The structure has three storeys plus attics and consists of three bays. The shopfront is made of green glazed faience and is adorned with foliage pilasters. The central doorway includes an overlight and a shell canopy, flanked by segment-arched cross mullioned windows. The upper floors are finished in brown glazed faience and are divided by rusticated half-columns in three orders. The first floor has a blank centre with a bracket supporting a dummy bell, and on either side, there are canted oriel windows with brackets and crests, featuring ogee-headed lights with transoms. Above this, there is a single window flanked by three-light cross mullioned windows, all with segment heads and voussoirs.
The attics, positioned above the main cornice, feature a broken segmental pediment with a finial and are flanked by a parapet. The central Venetian window has keystones and is flanked by single windows, all of which are composite sashes. The rear elevation facing Forman Street has three storeys and an eight-window range, topped with a modillion cornice. The pubfront is finished in green and blue glazed faience with cross mullioned windows, and above this, there are regular courses of composite sashes.
Inside, the interior has mainly been refitted in the late 20th century. The central bar, dating from the early 20th century, features panelled wainscotting, a bow-fronted bar, and a cross beam ceiling with a central skylight.
