Description

46 Nottingham Road is a house that has been converted into a Probation Service office. It was built in 1858, with later additions made to the front in the late 19th century and to the rear in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features steeply pitched plain tile roofs with coped gables, kneelers, and finials, along with single gable, ridge, and side wall stacks. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and has cast-iron rainwater heads dated 1858. The structure is L-shaped, consisting of two storeys plus attics and has a four-window range.

The front of the building, facing Commercial Gate, includes a tall off-centre wing with a two-storey canted stone bay window that has two ogee-headed lights, flanked by similar single lights. Below this, there are taller windows of the same style. Above the bay window, there is a blank triangle in the gable. To the left, there are two trefoil-headed single lancets, and below, a single-storey lean-to addition made of rock-faced stone with a slate roof and a 20th-century two-light casement. To the right, there are two pairs of trefoil-headed single lancets, and above, two through-eaves dormers—one with a single lancet and the other with a double lancet, both trefoil-headed. In the return angle, there is a steeply gabled porch with a coped gable and finial, featuring a moulded pointed-arched doorway with a hoodmould and stops, along with a boarded door. Above the door, there is an inscribed tablet and a blank triangle. To the left of the porch, there is a single lancet, and to the right, a triple lancet, both trefoil-headed.

The right gable facing Nottingham Road has a canted two-storey bay window with ogee-headed lights similar to the front. Above this bay window, there is a single lancet, and the wing to the right features a double lancet on each floor.

Inside, the hallway has a pointed arch and a wooden dogleg stair with a wrought-iron balustrade and wooden handrail.
