Description

St Paul’s Church is designed in the Early English style and features rock-faced coursed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The elevation facing Commercial Street has a central octagonal tower topped with a spire, flanked by stepped buttresses that rise to pinnacles. The bell stage of the tower includes lancet windows, while the lower part serves as an open porch with tall Gothic arches and a vaulted ceiling adorned with ribs and floral bosses. The entrance doorways are Gothic, and there is a stepped lancet window at the rear. The tower is flanked by 2-light windows.

The side elevation consists of nine bays, with the end bays featuring steep gables and blind windows. Each bay has a tall 2-light window, and there is a low porch in the second and last bays. The west elevation has five bays, with tall 2-light windows in the outer bays and a central polygonal apse.

Internally, the church is aligned with the chancel at the east end, creating a broad and spacious undivided interior. It has a flat ribbed and boarded ceiling with wall brackets. A gallery at the west end is supported by iron columns and features a pierced wooden frontal. Below the gallery is the apse, which was used as a baptistery. The chancel is shallow and set beneath a tall arch, flanked by lower arches, and includes a 5-light stepped lancet window with stained glass, along with single lancets in the outer bays. There are doors leading to flanking vestries at the east end, but seating and the organ have been removed. The church also includes forecourt walls and railings.
