Description
This is a group of shops, offices, and accommodation on upper floors, forming a three-story, six-bay range, including an entrance bay. The building is constructed of brick and stone, now with a replacement machine-tile roof and modest, corniced brick stacks. The design is asymmetrical, intended to be completed with an end bay to the right matching that on the left end at number 18. Pilasters rise from the first through second floors, defining each bay. All shopfronts have been remodelled, and the windows are horned sashes with multipane upper lights and plate glass lower sashes. The entrance bay, situated off-centre to the right, is built of rusticated ashlar and features a segmental arched parapet incorporating a cartouche, a round-arched second-floor window, and a two-light first-floor window with an extended keystone, all flanked by enriched Ionic pilasters. A bracketed hood supported on giant pilasters adorns the ground floor entrance. The bays to each side and the end on the left feature a three-window range of sashes with eared and shouldered surrounds. The second floor of these bays has aprons to the side windows, carved panels with swags at the centre, an egg and dart cornice and a balustraded parapet. The intervening bays (the first and fifth from the right) also display a three-window range of similar sashes. These bays are distinguished by a decorative entablature to the central second-floor window, which is set beneath a swept segmental-arched gable containing a small pierced light. Piers with orbs terminate the balustrade above the dividing pilasters.
