Description

Havelock Street Chapel and the attached Hall is a building designed in a Medieval style influenced by North Italian examples, constructed using brown, buff, and white stone with red and yellow brick dressings, and topped with a slate roof. The chapel features round-headed openings with polychrome voussoirs that form pointed arches. It is built on a basement level due to the sloping ground at the rear. The gable and side elevations display a row of arcading at the eaves level. The main entrance is through a projecting gabled porch that has side windows and steps leading up to the doorway. This porch is flanked by tall windows with slender shafts and floral capitals. A Bathstone wheel window above the entrance bears the inscription "Presbyterian Church" and is adorned with polychrome voussoirs. The corners of the chapel are accentuated by polygonal turrets, with the left turret featuring a floral corbel, although the pinnacles are missing. The side elevation facing North Street has four bays with tall two-light windows, also featuring polychrome voussoirs, and basement windows with shouldered heads, along with a doorway to the north.

To the right, the lower attached hall is built in a similar style and uses similar materials, although some dressings are in brick rather than stone. This single-storey hall has a palmette finial on the gable, a central doorway flanked by tall windows, and a central wheel window above the doorway.

Inside, the entrance leads to a lobby that features Art Nouveau style glass and a timber screen, with stairs leading to a gallery within the chapel. The gallery is U-shaped and supported by spiral cast-iron columns with floral capitals, and it has a wooden gallery frontal. The ceiling is panelled with a cornice, and a deep arch encloses the organ, which has exposed pipes. The pulpit and set fawr enclosure include wrought-iron work, and there are three banks of pews, with those on the sides being canted.
