Description

31, 32, 33 High Street, including 2a & 2-4 Skinner Street, is a group of development shops with offices above, built in the Free Renaissance style. The building is constructed of pressed red brick and terra cotta and consists of three storeys plus attics. On the left side, there is a large two-storey pedimented attic dormer featuring a Dutch gable and finials, with an arched window on the upper level and two 2-light windows with pediments below. The second floor has a shallow oriel with a central niche and relief panelled aprons, along with four windows at the first floor level.

To the right, a chimney is flanked by a second-floor window with two lights and a column between, and a first-floor window with a pediment. A corner turret rises above the roofline for two storeys, topped with a steep slate roof that includes a lantern. The upper level of the turret is polygonal and features doors leading onto a balcony with iron rails, which is corbelled over the lower level.

In Skinner Street, the building continues with two bays similar to those on the left, followed by another bay that has a dormer above enclosing an arched window, and then a narrow bay. There are three additional bays (2-4 Skinner Street) in a simpler style, with the end bay featuring a gable. On the ground floor, No 33 (Principality) has a shopfront with polished granite detailing, while the other shops have modern shopfronts.
