Description

Castle Terrace comprises a row of Georgian houses, numbers 33a to 47, situated on Bridge Street. The terrace rises with the slope of the road, between the Wye Bridge and the town centre. Each house is single-fronted, with three storeys and a cellar, and features a single window on each floor. The walls are of scored and painted roughcast, with slate roofs and narrow brick stacks located between the divisions of the houses. Upper-floor windows are generally 3/6-pane sashes set within reveals, while first-floor windows are typically 6/6-pane sashes. The ground-floor windows are generally segmental bows with small panes, fixed but incorporating single-pane opening lights, and are set above deep plinths. Panelled doors are contained within wooden door cases on the left-hand side, some with rectangular overlights. Above the doors are shallow wooden hoods supported by brackets, most of which are enriched with fretwork. The terrace presents a symmetrical appearance, although there are some alterations to detail and differences in dimensions between the individual houses. One house retains its original bow window, but now features triple-light sashes.
