Description
Bella Vista, located at Nos. 59 and 61 Monmouth Road, is a pair of 18th-century houses that includes garden walls, gatepiers, and railings. The buildings are constructed from squared rock-faced red sandstone rubble with Bath limestone dressings and feature natural slate roofs with stone stacks. Each house is L-shaped with a rear service wing and consists of two storeys and an attic, presenting a balanced asymmetrical appearance.
Each house has three bays facing the street. The outer bays feature square two-storey bay windows, with a three-light mullion-and-transom window on each floor, rising to a battlemented parapet. The second bay is recessed and contains a two-light window on each floor. The central abutting bays are gabled and include two-storey canted bay windows with four lights and a plaster panel in between. The gables above serve as large dormers, each fitted with a six-over-two pane sash window. The steeply pitched roof has a large shared central stack. The return elevations include lean-to porches and another large stack, with the service wing located behind.
This description pertains to the right-hand house of the pair. The rear elevation has not been inspected, and the interior was not inspected during the resurvey.
