Description

Brookfield is a two-storey building primarily constructed of rough rendered and painted brickwork, featuring revealed red bricks, tile hanging, and timber-framing with brick nogging. It has plain tile roofs with ridge tiles and brick stacks, and an L-shaped plan with a service wing at the rear. The main elevation has two windows, while the garden elevation includes a two-storey canted bay on the left, which has 1 + 3 + 1 mullion-and-transom lights with small panes in the heads of the lower lights. The bay is brick below the ground floor window, tile hung between the windows, and topped with a pointed roof and spike finial. To the right of the bay is a 3-light mullion-and-transom window with two opening lights, and above this is a large gable featuring a 4-light window. The upper wall of the gable is timber framed with red brick nogging in stretcher bond, and the whole floor jetties slightly on small brackets. The gable has decorative bargeboards, a steeply pitched roof, and tall moulded stacks. The left return has a gabled entrance porch, and the wing to the left has a timber-framed upper floor with a 2-light window. The gable end of the wing features a stair window and three other casement windows. The rear service wing has various windows, including a steel casement on the upper floor, and a tall rendered stack.

Inside, the building shows very little alteration to its Edwardian planning or decoration. It retains much original joinery, including a staircase with a mahogany rail and turned vases on the newels, dado panelling, and original doors. The three principal fireplaces have matching timber surrounds but feature different sets of picture tiles designed by J Moyr Smith for Mintons China Works, depicting scenes from Shakespeare (circa 1873), Idylls of the King (circa 1875), and Spirit of the Flowers, a set of naked nymphs (1872-3). These tiles illustrate the enduring popularity of tile designs from that period.
