Description

30 Monmouth Road is an Italianate villa built in the 19th century, featuring painted stucco elevations with some stone dressings, a Welsh slate roof, and rendered stacks. The building is square in shape with an entrance tower and a gabled stair wing at the back, standing two storeys high, with three storeys in the tower.

The east elevation, facing the garden and road, has a symmetrical three-bay front, with the central segmental bay projecting forward. This bay contains three French casements with keyed architrave surrounds below and three 4 over 4 pane sashes above, also featuring raised surrounds and keyed heads. The bay is framed by pilasters that rise to support a broken pediment. To the left of the central bay is a tripartite window with a French casement and sidelights, all with transoms, set in a raised frame. There is a band between the floors, quoin pilasters, and an eaves band. The upper floor window consists of a paired sash with a raised surround and a keyed arched head, along with a panelled apron that has a projecting cill on brackets. The timber eaves and hipped roof complete this section. A similar bay is found to the right of the centre, although this wing has been significantly rebuilt in 2005. A terrace balustrade with vases runs along the front.

The main entrance is located in the tower to the left and behind. It features quoin pilasters and a rusticated ground floor. The entrance consists of an arched panelled door with a fanlight above, a paired sash window on the first floor, and a triple window on the second floor. There are storey bands, timber eaves, and a pyramid roof.

The rear elevation has a main block of three bays, each with 6 over 6 pane sashes on both floors. There is an altered back door on the ground floor to the right and a 4-light arched-headed stair window above. This bay is pedimented and set slightly forward, featuring an oculus in the pediment. An additional window bay set back to the left has been extensively refurbished in 2005.

The interior was not inspected during the resurvey.
