Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the early 19th century, with 20th-century additions. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with a hipped slate roof, featuring a moulded stack to the party wall and the right wing. The overall plan is double-depth.

The houses are three storeys high with basements, each featuring a single window on each floor. They possess a returned coped parapet, a cornice, a lintel frieze, and a ground-floor platband. Six/six-pane sash windows are present on the second and ground floors. Number 1, located to the left, has a two/two-pane sash window with a lowered sill to the front of the first floor. The two-window left-hand return has banded rustication to the ground floor, with six/six-pane sash windows on the second and ground floors, and horned two/two-pane sashes flanking a late 19th-century canted oriel window on the first floor. An enclosed projecting porch, centrally positioned, features a returned parapet, a cornice, banded rustication, steps leading up to a semicircular arch facing the front, and a three-light window with a semicircular head to each light on the left return. Number 2 features six/six-pane sash windows, with shutters on the upper floors; the first-floor window has a lowered sill and unaltered short shutters. A two-storey wing extends to the right, mirroring the parapet, cornice, and frieze of the main block. There’s one two/two-pane sash window in this wing. Balconettes are present on the first and ground-floor windows of the main block. Another enclosed projecting porch, located to the right of the main block, includes a parapet, cornice, a semicircular arch with returned impost bands, a half-glazed six-panel door with an overlight, and semicircular arched openings to the returns. A 20th-century garage is situated to the right of the porch. The interiors were not inspected.

These houses are part of a well-defined Regency suburban development and demonstrate the influence of the Greek Revival on Bath’s domestic architecture.
