Description
A symmetrical pair of houses built around 1820. They are constructed from limestone ashlar with an unseen roof and central chimney stacks dividing the party wall and marking the ends of the central block. The houses have a double-depth plan.
The two-storey facades, with basements, feature five windows each, arranged symmetrically. The central three windows project slightly forward, topped by a coped parapet that steps up on either side and culminates in a pediment at the centre. A stopped cornice and lintel frieze once supported balconettes on the eight/eight-pane sash windows, except for those in the centre, which have painted glazing bars and sills to blind recesses. The lower, two-storey side wings have returned coved cornices and coped parapets to the gable ends of their double-pitched roofs, along with ground floor lintels, six/six-pane sash windows, and entrances to the returns.
Number 3 on the left retains original details, including horns on the restored windows and a balconette to the ground floor on the left. Number 4 has vertical glazing bars to horned two/two-pane sash windows and retains balconettes to the first floor on the left and the ground floor on the right.
The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are part of a notable Regency suburban development, influenced by the Greek Revival and representative of Bath's domestic architecture of the period.
