Description
No. 10 Upper Lansdown Mews is a garden house originally associated with No. 10 Lansdown Crescent, now functioning as a separate dwelling. It dates from the early 19th century and features 20th-century additions. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with slate roofs and moulded stacks on the returns.
The structure has a two-unit plan with later hip-roofed wings at the street front. It stands two storeys high and has a wide five-window arrangement on the garden front. This front includes a coped parapet and cornice, with the central section slightly projecting forward, featuring a set-back door and a window above. The outer ranges have paired windows with shared sills, with three-over-three pane sashes on the first floor and six-over-nine panes on the ground floor, all of which have been restored. Large rectangular lead rainwater heads are present on the returns.
The street facade is irregular and has been much restored. The left-hand wing has a canted bay with six-over-six pane sash windows on the first floor and two windows on the ground floor. The right-hand wing features a single window above a 20th-century garage door. The set-back central range includes a small Venetian window over a 20th-century porch and door. The interior has not been inspected. This building is an example of the more grand mews structures associated with significant developments of the time, as Lansdown Crescent was built in 1792 to designs by John Palmer.
