Description

Skenfrith Mill is a robust stone-built watermill, featuring an intact water wheel. It is constructed from snecked rubble with freestone quoins and dressings around most openings, topped with slate roofs. The building has a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the leet at its rear, with the southeast half designed as a twin-gabled wing. It stands three-and-a-half storeys tall.

The entrance front faces southwest, where the left half is gabled and topped with a gable chimney. There is a segmental-headed doorway slightly offset to the right of center at ground floor level, featuring a board door. Above, there are two similar doorways at first-floor level and a segmental-headed 16-pane top-hung casement window in the gable to the left. At the second-floor level on the right-hand side, there is a small square datestone inscribed "E. PROSSER . M / P. BEAVAN . C / 1867."

The left (northwest) return wall, which faces the castle, is symmetrical, with a pair of square 2-light casement windows at both ground and first floors, and a single segmental-headed 2-light casement window centered on the second floor. The twin-gabled southeast side is also symmetrical, with each half featuring a segmental-headed 16-pane window on each main floor and a narrow 6-pane attic window in the gable, all with top-hung casement openings.

At the rear, over the leet, the right-hand half is gabled and includes a wheel-pit that houses a large iron-framed undershot water wheel with wooden paddles. Above the wheel-pit, there are three vertically aligned windows, all matching the glazing style of the southeast side.
