Description
Castle Mill is a water mill constructed from rubble stone, featuring a gabled slate roof that is partly collapsed. The building stands two storeys high, with the eastern side built into a bank, providing direct access to the milling floor and a mill-leat that enters through the rear wall into an integral wheel pit. There is an added single storey range on the western side.
The northern end has a lower-level cart entry, which includes a flat timber lintel and half-glazed double doors. Above this entry is a cambered-headed upper window with stone voussoirs and a slate sill. On the eastern side, there is a door located under the eaves to the right, featuring a slate head, and a blocked opening to the right with stone voussoirs. The western side has a tall narrow exit from the wheel pit to the right, which is framed by cambered cut stone voussoirs. The overshot wheel has been removed. To the left, the single storey range has a two-bay open northern front that was formerly enclosed, with a smoke-blackened interior and a slate roof. There is one first-floor window in the main range, also with stone voussoirs. The southern end has an opening to the wheel pit with a timber lintel and a small upper window with rough stone voussoirs.
Inside, the loft floor is partially collapsed, and there is no machinery present.
