Description

The War Memorial located south of Skenfrith Castle is a cross mounted on a walled podium that also serves as a horse trough. It commemorates those who served in the Great War from 1914 to 1919. The memorial is constructed from limestone and sandstone. The rectangular podium stands almost 2 meters high and features a symmetrical tripartite front facing the road. This front includes a central wall that incorporates the horse trough, flanked by plain entrances leading to winding steps that ascend to a platform in front of the cross, which is positioned at the center of the rear wall.

The central wall is adorned with broad pilasters and terminal piers on either side of the entrances, all featuring high chamfered plinths and flat copings. The horse trough is designed as a semi-circular arched recess with a hollow-chamfered surround and a large panelled keystone, which protects a shallow convex-fronted bowl at ground level. The cross on the back wall rests on a tapered square plinth set on a deep moulded base, with each side of the plinth displaying a moulded and shouldered lettered panel. The tall octagonal shaft of the cross is finished as a wheel cross.

The lettering on the panel at the south front indicates that the memorial was erected by the parishioners and lists nine men from Skenfrith who made the ultimate sacrifice, including five officers, three of whom served in the Royal Air Force, notably Captain R. Thomas, who received the Croix de Guerre. Uniquely, the panels on the east and west sides name "those who served and returned," with 20 names on the west side and 22 on the east side. The rear panel commemorates World War II, listing three names.
