Description
The barn at Pen-isha-plwydd Farm is a Grade II listed building primarily constructed from heavy oak timber framing with red sandstone rubble walls. It features two stone extensions on the north side and one concrete extension on the south. The main barn has a Welsh slate roof, while all extensions are covered with corrugated metal sheeting. Although the timber framing is currently boarded over, it originally displayed woven oak slats. One of the north extensions has a gabled roof, while the other two have lean-to roofs. The barn has corner buttresses where it meets a later stable and includes opposed cart entrances with large timber double doors.
Inside, the exposed oak frame is box framed with square panels measuring one metre, arranged in four tiers, with three panels of woven oak slats still visible. The barn is five bays wide, featuring a central threshing floor. The principal posts are jowelled and support heavy queen strut principal rafter trusses, which are complemented by three tiers of trenched purlins. The principals are halved and pegged at the apex, supporting a light ridge piece. Most of the purlins and some secondary rafters are original.
