Description

Pen-isha-plwydd Farmhouse is a building dating back to the 17th century, with a significant addition from the 1870s. It is constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble, with Welsh slate roofs. The 1870s section is rock faced, and features quoins and window dressings that stand proud. A considerable portion of the south wall of the 17th-century section, including the chimneys, was refaced in the 1870s.

The house comprises two distinct rectangular two-storey blocks. The 17th-century section appears to have a symmetrical double-fronted design with a central entrance and staircase, but it actually retains a traditional three-room 17th-century plan, with the right-hand room partially covered by the staircase lean-to and incorporated into the 1870s block. The north elevation exhibits four remarkable wood-framed windows, each with six lights arranged as 3 over 3. The centre lower light has an arched head, with a moulded mullion dividing the upper half. The ovolo mullions and jambs of these windows are reeded. One surviving light in the upper left window retains original leaded quarries. A single-storey gabled porch, built as a bakehouse with a chimney, is centrally located on the front elevation. This porch was constructed when the 1870s block altered the original entrance into a back door. A lean-to extension with a modern window on the ground floor and a cross-framed casement above sits on the right-hand end of the north elevation. The south elevation has been largely refaced with rock-faced rubble. It is punctuated by three windows; the left-hand window is a Victorian sash with two lights over two panes, followed by a large external stack, then a two-light-over-two-pane sash above an eight-light-over-eight-pane sash, and finally an eight-light-over-two-pane sash above a two-light-over-two-pane sash. A gable stack is located on the right-hand gable, and two roof lights are present.

The 1870s block faces west. It features a first-floor window on the north gable and one on each floor in the south gable, all with two lights over two panes. The west elevation contains three windows, all two-light-over-two-pane sashes. The right-hand bay is wider, and a recessed entrance porch sits beneath an arched doorway in the centre bay. The eaves overhang, with a stone stack at either end of the ridge.

The interior of the 17th-century section is plain and has been altered. It has two main rooms on each floor, plus an additional room incorporated into the 1870s extension. Fireplaces have been altered; the beams are plain, and a central single-flight staircase is a later addition, reflecting the downgrade of the 17th-century building into a service wing. The roof structure includes four principal rafter trusses, halved and pegged at the apex and carrying a diagonal set ridge piece. One truss retains its tie beam, while the others have been removed and are stored. There are three tiers of staggered purlins. The 1870s building largely retains its original Victorian character in its four principal rooms and staircase. Beneath the 1870s section is an earlier cider cellar featuring stone shelves on either side and a vaulted roof.
