Description
The Former Detached Kitchen and Dairy at Upper Dyffryn is a 17th-century building constructed from rubble stone, topped with a slate roof and a tile ridge. The southwest garden front features an off-centre stone staircase leading to an upper doorway, which is a 17th-century plank door with applied fillets. The windows are unglazed and have plain square mullions. On the first floor to the left, there is a 2-light mullion window. The ground floor to the left has a 2-light mullion window supported by iron stanchions, with segmental arched stone voussoirs, while the right side has a single light window that was formerly a 4-light mullion. The northeast side includes a 2-light mullion window on the first floor and two 2-light mullion windows with stanchions on the ground floor, along with a blocked doorway to the left. The southwest gable showcases a fine 17th-century flat arched ovolo moulded doorway with an ornate shaped door-head, leading to a plank door with strap hinges.
The first floor, which is accessible via the external stone stair, is open to the roof and consists of three bays with framed trusses featuring raking queen struts and trenched purlins at two levels. The window openings are fitted with internal boarded shutters that have strap hinges. Access to the wash-house and dairy is through the southeast gable. The floors are stone flagged, and the ceiling beams are chamfered with scroll stops. There is a broad fireplace opening with a 19th-century brick boiler to the right. The dairy contains stone shelves supported by vertical stone slabs and an in situ butter churn.
