Description
The garden terracing, steps, pool, pergola, and summerhouse at Wyndcliffe Court are notable features constructed from red sandstone rubble with stone slate roofs. The south side of the house is supported by a retaining wall that holds up the terrace. This terrace features a stone balustrade in the center, with a double staircase leading down to a lower terrace, which is accessed via a flight of semi-circular steps to the bottom level. The central terrace includes a semi-circular pool that fronts a hemispherical niche with a carved head fountain, all designed in the style of Lutyens.
To the east, the upper terrace wall extends to a pergola made of stone piers with stone slated beams. The lower terrace continues eastward to include a small revetted sun trap, while to the west, it ramps up to form the enclosing south wall of the sunken garden and leads to the corner summerhouse. This summerhouse is two storeys high, with the lower level originally serving as a mushroom house featuring an arched door. The upper level boasts a three-bay loggia on the south side, and the two faces facing the sunken garden have arched keyed doorways flanked by two 4-pane windows. It is topped with a pyramid roof and a stone ball finial.
The sunken garden includes additional terraces and steps, along with a rectangular stone-edged pool. There is also an archway and a flight of stone steps located on the north side of the house. The summerhouse is open and lacks any significant features, and the mushroom house was not observed during the resurvey.
