Description

SU 84 NW FARNHAM Greenhill Road (South-east side) 11/381 Terrace with pools and steps up to house, garden retaining" walls, end pavilions and gazebo and steps at west end at No 2 (Mavins End and Mavins Bouse) .

GV II Terrace with pools, steps, retaining walls, end-pavilions and gazebo. 1925. By H Falkner. Rubblestone, brick and ashlar; plain-tile roof to gazebo, pantile roofs to pavilions. Wide flag-stoned terrace has 3 curved-rectangular pools and 4 flights of shallow steps at front, to ends and flanking centre. To rear of terrace is rubblestone retaining wall with buttresses and archway (to chamber) at left end; at centre wall is raked and returns to flank flight of shallow steps leading up to house (q.v.). Brick end-pavilions have open side to terrace with ashlar, camposite-capitalled columns supporting timber lintels; banded brick corner piers; front gables each have rusticated quoins and a tall, round-arched opening with tile keystone (formerly with a sash window). At left end a flight of shallow steps with brick retaining wall winds around hexagonal brick gazebo which has a segmental-arched opening to each side, one forming entrance; stepped eaves; swept, domed roof with finial.
