Description
This is a terrace with pools and steps leading up to a house, along with garden retaining walls, end pavilions, and a gazebo, located at No 2 (Mavins End and Mavins House). It was built in 1925 by H Falkner. The structure features rubblestone, brick, and ashlar materials, with a plain-tile roof on the gazebo and pantile roofs on the pavilions.
The wide flag-stoned terrace includes three curved-rectangular pools and four flights of shallow steps at the front, positioned at the ends and flanking the center. At the rear of the terrace, there is a rubblestone retaining wall with buttresses and an archway leading to a chamber at the left end. The center wall is raked and returns to flank a flight of shallow steps that lead up to the house.
The brick end-pavilions have open sides facing the terrace, with ashlar columns featuring composite capitals that support timber lintels. The corner piers are banded brick, and the front gables have rusticated quoins and tall, round-arched openings with tile keystones, which previously held sash windows. At the left end, a flight of shallow steps with a brick retaining wall winds around a hexagonal brick gazebo. This gazebo has segmental-arched openings on each side, one of which serves as an entrance, stepped eaves, and a swept, domed roof topped with a finial.
