Description
Mavins End and Mavins House are a pair of houses with an attached garage, built in 1927 by H. Falkner, and subdivided in 1981. The houses are constructed of red brick in English bond with ashlar dressings, and have a plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and consists of 2:2:5 bays, with a quadrant wall at the front right linking to the garage. The windows are mostly small-pane metal casement windows, frequently transomed.
The main element of the front elevation is composed of five bays divided into thirds by giant brick pilasters with moulded capitals. The central bay projects forward under a pediment, and contains a door of eight raised and fielded panels within a polished stone surround, featuring an Ionic ashlar architrave and segmental pediment. Narrow side-lights are set within tiled surrounds; the windows above are of 1, 2, and 1 lights respectively. A cornice runs along the top of the elevation. Returns are reverse-curved, with a curved window on each floor. The outer bays each have a two-light window to each floor, with round brick relieving arches and tiled tympana to the ground floor windows. A door has been inserted into the left bay (now part of Mavins House), and a first-floor window is set into the right bay, offset below the parapet. The roof has a hipped central-valley, with a central flat-roofed dormer, a later inserted skylight and stacks at the sides.
To the left of the main house, two bays project with a hipped roof. The first-floor windows break the eaves under hip gablets, with a stack to the left side. Further to the left, a single-storey two-bay section under a hipped roof features a round-arched internal porch leading to former w.c. and larder, and to the kitchen. A quadrant wall projects from the right-hand corner, rising over a round-arched gateway with flanking pilasters and a decorative iron gate, connecting to the garage. The garage has a gable end with a six-leaf, part-glazed door, tile hanging, and a two-light window under a half-hip roof.
The garden elevation features projecting polygonal bays to either end with a window to each face, and a central Tuscan-columned loggia, bowed at the centre, with a parapet featuring decorative panels. There are three segmental-pedimented dormers. Two bays on the right are recessed, having a full-width, tripartite, Tuscan-columned window with a French window to the ground floor; an inserted skylight is also present. A former kitchen extension, dating to circa 1988 and sympathetic to the original design, is situated on the right. The right return has three bays; a Tuscan-columned loggia, now glazed, with a panelled parapet similar to the front. First-floor windows have tiled tympana below relieving arches, and one segmental-pedimented dormer.
Internally, the houses include original panelled doors, decorative central-heating boxes, decorative fireplaces, panelling, cornices, and in Mavins End, a decorative corner cupboard in a bedroom and tiling in a bathroom.
