Description
The St Thomas-on-the-Bourne War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in May 1921 and designed by Harold Falkner. It is situated in the grounds of the Church of St Thomas-on-the-Bourne, to the west of the church, and is made of Penryn granite.
The memorial stands 23 feet tall and features a square two-stepped base and plinth, from which a square shaft rises, topped with a Celtic wheel cross. The front (west) face of the cross and shaft is intricately carved with vine leaves and grapes, and includes four circular bosses at the centre, top, and arms of the cross.
On the western face of the plinth, the inscription reads: ‘TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THESE FROM THE BOURNE PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918’. Below this, on the base, is the additional engraving ‘AND IN THE / WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945’. The names of those who fell are inscribed in lead lettering on the other three faces of the memorial.
