Description
South Terrace at Gliffaes is a terrace made of flagstones, with some infill from the late 20th century, and is bordered by rubble stone parapet walls above rubble stone revetment. The low parapet wall on the south side features seven bays with slightly taller square piers. Alternate bays are fitted with cast iron railings that have a star pattern in the center. The stonework includes later inset mosaic designs of dragons, bull's heads, and a cockerel. On the west side, there are railings, and the terrace extends to the west side of the house, culminating in curved steps leading to a late 20th-century projection. At the northeast end, there is a short flight of steps added with a lean-to against the east cross wing of the house, which leads to stone steps beyond the east terrace wall to a lower terrace walk. The lower walk features a low parapet with flat coping and slightly taller piers. Within this lower walk, there are three tunnel-vaulted alcoves in the revetment. At the east end, there is an additional short passage from the alcove to the stone steps, with similar steps located on the west side of the terrace.
