Description
Hardwick Cottage is a detached house built in the late Regency lodge or cottage orne style. It features a roughcast exterior with a hipped pitched Welsh slate roof and tall angled paired brick lateral stacks. The house has two storeys and a two-window range of small-pane cross-framed casements surrounded by decorative trellis. The ground floor includes canted bays topped with pitched slate roofs and small cross-framed multi-pane casements. There is a side entrance with a margin-glazed door. At the rear, there is a smoke-house for fish smoking, which includes a brick vault and a frontage to a rock-hewn chamber.
Inside, rooms lead off a wide hall that has Bathstone flags with black diamond inlay. The open-well staircase and landing feature stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. Although the main downstairs fireplaces have been replaced, the bedrooms still have plain classical fireplaces. All doors are four-panelled and retain their original fittings. The reveals and shutters are panelled, with elm floorboards on the first floor and flags on the ground floor.
