Description

The Usk Rural Life Museum is a long barn-like building that has been converted from early housing into a museum. The structure shows many signs of alteration in its masonry and is constructed from unrendered stone rubble with some rough brick dressings, topped by a slate roof and featuring iron ties. It is a single-storey building with a loft and has asymmetrical openings across the front, with timber lintels and some brick surrounds. Notably, there is a lintel from a former larger opening above a window at the right end and a wide former double doorway in the center. The north gable end displays blocked features, including a low rectangular window on the left and a part 16th to 17th century wood mullioned window in the apex. There is a clear construction break at the right corner between the front and side masonry, and a lower cross wing at the rear.

Inside, the rear wing includes former living accommodation and is arranged as a house, retaining features such as a flag floor, a wooden spiral staircase, a fireplace with a grate, and white painted walls along with exposed ceiling joists and boards. The main timber roof retains some old timbers, including two large tie beams that are lower than the main structure and set into the wall below the wallplate. The trusses are mainly A-frame, with two ties, and there are remains of lofts. In the southeast corner, there is a cross wing with a loft, low beams, and three rows of purlins. The openings feature timber lintels, with one boarded up, and there are remains of further timber frames within the masonry, along with more blocked features. Additionally, there are lower double doors in the rear wall of the main section, which are not opposite the main entrance.
