Description
The Lawns is a large later Georgian gentry house. It features roughcast rendered and painted walls, a hipped swept small-slate roof with a shallow pitch, eaves cornice, and tall, narrow rendered lateral stacks, with part of the stack being external at the front left. The house has three storeys and a 3-bay frontage, with the center bay being narrower and recessed. The sash windows, set in reveals with narrow glazing bars, increase in length down the frontage: 6-pane on the top floor, 9-pane on the first floor, and 12-pane on the ground floor, with one window in each bay. The modest central round-arched doorway is flanked by narrow reeded pilasters and features a recessed 6-panelled part-glazed door with panelled reveals and a fanlight.
The garden frontage at the rear is more elaborate, showcasing raised moulded dressings, including quoins, lintels, keystones, voussoirs, jambs, and a Gibbs surround to all the windows. The arrangement of sash windows is similar to the 3-bay frontage, but the ground-floor windows are tripartite with lead drip moulds on either side of a round-arched doorway that has a recessed panelled door with a wide fanlight featuring radial glazing and margin-lights.
The building has been converted into seven flats but is said to retain a fine staircase.
