Description
The blast furnaces are significant structures built of stone and brick, arranged on a square plan. Their ashlar stone elevations taper towards the top, and while they have lost some height, they remain just below their original dimensions. The side elevations feature small, intact tuyere arches.
Furnace No 2 includes several tie bars in the upper sections of its front and side elevations. It retains its original stone casing and cast house, which is listed separately.
Furnace No 4 has a large hearth opening, or tymp, created with an outer semi-circular brick-lined arch and an inner segmental brick-lined arch. Above the top of the arch, the facing stone of the outer furnace shell has been removed, revealing the stone core and the conical refractory brick lining.
Furnace No 5 shares the same design as Furnace No 4, although its hearth opening arch is in poorer condition.
