Description

Stack Square consists of buildings forming three sides of a square around the ruined base of the 1860 engine house chimney stack. The south range is known as Engine Row. The buildings are constructed with rubble stone outer walls and feature red brick door and window heads. The windows have stone sills and iron frames. The north and south ranges have been restored in their original style, while the east range is currently undergoing reconstruction.

The north range and Engine Row each contain a terrace of four houses, while the east range includes five houses and the company shop. The frontages of the north and south ranges feature a centrally positioned stable door, two windows on the ground floor, and two windows on the first floor. The houses in the east range are narrower, with a single window on each floor. The company shop, located at the south corner, has three storeys, with a door and a single window on each floor. The roofs are pitched and covered with slate, and there are brick chimney stacks in the house partitions. Engine Row has two cat slide extensions at the rear.

The houses are arranged in pairs, each with a fireplace and chimney in the end walls. The partitions are made of oak framing and brick. Each house follows a conventional plan with two rooms on each floor and a larder on the ground floor. A corner staircase provides access to two bedrooms on the first floor. In Engine Row, the layout of the two western houses has been reconstructed. The house closest to the ironworks yard includes a small bread oven in the corner of the fireplace, while the two eastern houses feature a museum display.
