Description
49-55 Garden Suburbs, Circus is a group of four two-storey houses built in the Arts and Crafts style, featuring a butterfly-plan layout. Each house has a single window range at the front. The distinctive gabled elevations may show the influence of architect Philip Webb. Houses 49 and 55 are finished with pebbledash, while houses 51 and 53 are tile-hung. All have tiled roofs with swept overhanging eaves and brick chimney stacks. Some original leaded casement windows remain, although most have been replaced with imitations. The symmetrical main front is highlighted by the twin tile-hung gables that extend low on either side, jettied out and boarded at the top. The first floor features 4-light windows, with splayed bays below topped by hipped roofs. Entrances are located on either side beneath the gables. The single-window wings have hipped hoods over 3-light first floor windows. Unlike other nearby blocks, the gable ends to the north and east are symmetrical, showcasing brick-tiled details and cambered-arched 5-light windows on the first floor and 7-light windows below. The rear gables have fewer dormers compared to other principal blocks.
