34 Garden Suburbs, Circus

A block of four Arts and Crafts houses (Nos 30-36 even) arranged on a butterfly plan. The group steps down the slope, with No 30 being single-storey and attic while No 36 rises to two storeys and attic. Nos 32 and 34, distinguished by advanced gables, present two-window fronts.

The buildings are characterized by distinctively gabled, roughcast elevations with tiled roofs, overhanging eaves and tall chimney stacks—three rising to the main front pitch. No 30 features a hipped roof with tile-hung dormer. The design shows possible influence from the architecture of C F A Voysey and Philip Webb.

The main front is symmetrically arranged around twinned central gables with stepped brick-tile kneelers and 4-light windows over splayed bays (the window to No 34 has a cambered arch). Additional 4-light windows occur at the gable end of No 30 and to the first floor of No 36 beneath a hipped hood, while a 5-light window appears at the gable end of No 36. The entrances to Nos 30 and 36 are positioned on gable ends, square-headed with bracketed hoods; Nos 32 and 36 have round-arched entrances with recessed doors. Asymmetrical gable ends to the north and west (Nos 30 and 36) carry similar brick-tile kneelers and stone chimney stacks to the rear pitch; the gable of No 36 is boarded above its attic window.

Original windows feature leaded casement glazing, though many have been replaced with modern imitations within the original openings.

To the rear, flat-roofed dormers at two levels, part cat-slide roof, and tiled gabled outshuts are present.
