Description
No. 30 Garden Suburbs is part of a group of four houses built in the Arts and Crafts style, designed in a butterfly plan. This block steps down the slope, resulting in No. 30 being a single-storey house with an attic, while No. 36 is two-storeys with an attic. Nos. 32 and 34, which have advanced gables, feature two-window fronts. The houses have distinctively gabled, roughcast elevations with tiled roofs, overhanging eaves, and tall chimney stacks, including three on the main front pitch. No. 30 has a hipped roof with tile-hung dormers. The design may be influenced by the works of architects C. F. A. Voysey and Philip Webb.
The original windows feature leaded casement glazing, though many have been replaced with modern versions within the original openings. The symmetrical main front is highlighted by twin gables at the center, which have stepped brick-tile kneelers and 4-light windows, with a cambered arch on No. 34, above splayed bays. Additional 4-light windows can be found on the gable end of No. 30 and on the first floor of No. 36, which is sheltered by a hipped hood. No. 36 also has a 5-light window on its gable end. The entrances to Nos. 30 and 36 are located on the gable ends and are square-headed with bracketed hoods, while Nos. 32 and 34 feature round-arched entrances with recessed doors. The asymmetrical gable ends of Nos. 30 and 36 have similar brick-tile kneelers and stone chimney stacks on the rear pitch, with No. 36 having a boarded gable above the attic window. The rear includes flat-roofed dormers at two levels, part cat-slide roof, and tiled gabled outshuts.
