Description
24 Garden Suburbs is a two-storey and attic block of four houses, built in the Arts and Crafts style. The building features a butterfly plan and has a single window range at the front. Its elevations are made of rubble with quoins, topped by tiled roofs that have swept overhanging eaves and tall chimney stacks, including three on the main front pitch. The original windows are leaded casement types.
The main front has a symmetrical design, highlighted by distinctive twinned gables that may have been influenced by the architect Philip Webb. These gables sweep down low on either side and are jettied out, with boarding above 4-light windows. Although the gables have modern boarding and replacement glazing, along with modern ground floor bow windows, the Arts and Crafts character of the original design is mostly preserved.
At the base of the gables are broad round-headed entrances with split-stone voussoirs and recessed doors. The single window wings feature gables above 2-light first floor windows and 3-light ground floor windows, which are set under cambered relieving arches. The building has asymmetrical gable ends to the west and south, with attic lights, kneelers, and stone chimney stacks on the rear pitch; the southern stack is roughcast rendered. The ground floor doorways of Nos 22 and 28 have segmental arched hoods and flanking windows. The rear includes flat-roofed dormers and tiled outshuts, with replaced windows that mimic the original style.
