Description
No 53 Garden Suburbs, Circus is part of a group of four two-storey houses built in the Arts and Crafts style, featuring a butterfly-plan layout. The distinctive gabled elevations may show influence from the architect Philip Webb. The houses at Nos 49 and 55 are finished with pebbledash, while Nos 51 and 53 are tile-hung. All have tiled roofs with swept overhanging eaves and brick chimney stacks. Some original leaded casement windows remain, though most have been replaced with imitations.
The symmetrical design of the main front is highlighted by the twin tile-hung gables that extend low on either side, jettied out and boarded at the top. The first floor features four-light windows, with splayed bays below topped by hipped roofs. Entrances are located on either side beneath the gables. The single-window wings have hipped hoods over three-light first floor windows. Unlike some nearby houses, the gable ends to the north and east are symmetrical, showcasing brick-tiled details and cambered-arched five-light windows on the first floor, with seven-light windows below. The rear gable has fewer dormers compared to other principal blocks. No leaded glazing is retained.
