Description
The District Education Office of Mid-Glamorgan County Council, also known as the YMCA, is a four-storey building featuring a seven-bay Edwardian Baroque façade. It is constructed with red brick facings and terracotta dressings, topped with slate roofs and chimneys at the end parapets. The central bay is emphasized and rusticated, complete with a segmental pediment and flanking stacks. It includes a two-storey splayed bay that cantilevers over compressed first-floor windows displaying a YMCA panel. The main entrance is arched, keyblocked, and cavetto-splayed, featuring a recessed door-screen.
The outer bays are rusticated and pilastered, with tripartite top windows, cornices, and aprons on the second floor, while the first floor has segmental arches. All windows feature small-pane glazing. The overall fascias are adorned with paired Doric half-columns at the glazed outer ground-floor bays. At the rear, there is a brick range with a segmental bow facing west.
Inside, there is a full-height Imperial staircase within the entrance hall, which boasts a good ironwork handrail with trellised newels.
