Description
The War Memorial is an ashlar structure with a square plan, consisting of a base, shaft, and a carved top feature, all set on three steps. The base has a top moulding, while the shaft is a plain, high square form topped with an ogee-moulded cornice. The crowning feature is a cube with a cross in relief on each face, along with a relief laurel wreath and the Prince of Wales feathers, which are incised onto the cube's faces, featuring 3-dimensional tops that curve over the upper edges. At the very top, there is a small recessed feature with a coved square pedestal that carries a royal crown.
Attached to the shaft is a metal plaque commemorating the 1914-1918 war, and another plaque on the base honors the 1939-45 war. The relief crosses on the top feature also have the dates 1914-1918 incised.
The memorial is complemented by a screen wall made of similar stone, which is divided into three canted sections, each featuring outer pilasters on pedestals with carved capitals. The walls between the pilasters have mouldings at the top of the pedestal level and at the base of the capitals, defining a frieze beneath a dentil cornice. This frieze is finely lettered in three sections: "Greater love hath no / man than this that a man lay down / his life for his friends." The rear of the screen wall is constructed from tooled grey limestone.
The entire memorial stands on a platform elevated by three grey limestone steps, which are flanked by two low piers made of ashlar, each with plinths and caps, and a short ramped wall between them. There is an additional low pier on each side, aligned with the upper pier of the steps.
The memorial is enclosed by iron railings on a low coping of rock-faced stone. The railings extend approximately 15 meters, leading to a gate screen at right angles with fixed outer gates that feature a down-curved top rail and scroll work, along with double centre gates that have down-curved top rails meeting at the stile. The stanchions are topped with small ball finials. Another section of railings, about 15 meters long, runs at right angles downhill to the right, with the railings arranged in stepped sections.
